BLB All Natural Deodorant

Description

A Brave Little Bird All Natural Deodorant is an effective alternative to antiperspirant.  Bentonite Clay, Arrowroot Powder, and Baking Soda are used to create a non-irritating formula, that will help eliminate moisture & odor.  It currently comes in one scent, which is a refreshing, clean combination of 4 organic essential oils.  The scent is unisex and I have found that both men and women find it to be pleasant.  Your BLB Deodorant will come in a BPA free plastic container.

Key Ingredients:

Bentonite Clay:  Bentonite Clay is actually aged volcanic ash.  It is negatively charged and since most toxins are positively charged, the two will bind together.  A natural detoxification process occurs as the clay absorbs toxins, chemicals, and heavy metals.  It’s the perfect component in all natural deodorant, as it will absorb both moisture and odor.  Note:  Extra care has been taken to make sure the bentonite clay does not come in contact with any metal during production.

Organic Coconut Oil:  Coconut oil is naturally moisturizing and contains antibacterial and antifungal properties.  This helps combat odors caused by bacteria.

Organic Arrowroot Powder:  Arrowroot powder helps to naturally absorb moisture.

Baking Soda:  (sodium bicarbonate) Baking soda reduces & absorbs odor.  If not carefully formulated, it can cause irritation.  That is why I have combined equal amounts of Bentonite Clay, Arrowroot Powder, and Baking Soda to create a gentle, yet effective product.

Organic Essential Oil Blend:  (Tea Tree, Lavender, Orange, Cedarwood) This blend smells great, but I specifically chose Tea Tree and Lavender for their antibacterial properties.  These oils will help eliminate odor and keep you fresh!

Recommended Use

Gently apply to underarm, allowing your body heat to soften the product.  Don’t over apply.  A few swipes should do the trick.  Ideally, I recommend about 10 minutes drying time before getting dressed, to prevent transfer onto clothing.  Do not apply to broken skin or immediately after shaving.  If irritation occurs, please skip down to the “The Armpit Purge” section below.  Do not expose to heat.  If you accidentally expose to heat and your deodorant becomes soft, you can put in the refrigerator for a few hours to bring it back to a more solid state.  If you leave it in your car on a hot summer day, you will be sad.

Will I Sweat?

The answer is yes.  Unlike antiperspirant, deodorant will not stop you from sweating.  It will aid in eliminating and neutralizing the bacteria that causes our sweat to smell. The Bentonite Clay and Arrowroot Powder will help absorb moisture.

The reality of switching to a natural deodorant is that you will still experience some sweat, especially if you work out.  Remember that sweat is the bodies natural way of detoxing, so this is a good thing!  It is the aluminum in antiperspirant that blocks your sweat glands and prevents sweating.  I am an especially sweaty chick.  I will typically sweat through my shirt during a hard workout and its not uncommon for my hair to be drenched with sweat.  Creating a formula that actually works was very important to me.  I apply my BLB Deodorant in the morning and then if I plan to hit the gym or go for a run, I will do a quick refresh and apply again before my workout.

The Armpit Purge

When making the transition to a chemical free, all natural deodorant, you may experience something I like to call the armpit purge. This brief period can last anywhere from a week to a month, although, I’ve had several people tell me they felt no difference at all.  While temporarily uncomfortable, it is well worth the short struggle, as you are ridding your body of years of aluminum and chemical build up.

Sweaty Betty

The most common and uncomfortable part of the purge is all the sweating.  In an effort to rid the body of toxins accumulated from using antiperspirant, your body is likely to produce as much sweat as possible to get the gunk out!  This should be temporary and for some will last as little as a week, while for others, it could take several weeks.  Personally, it took me at least a full month.  Hang in there, it’s totally worth it!

Smelly Cat

Some people also report that they are more smelly than usual.  Thankfully, I did not experience this, but from what I’ve read, it is a possibility.  There are years of chemical build up that will be pouring out during this transition. The Bentonite Clay should help speed up this process, so hopefully this phase does not last long.  Try drinking more water, as this will help flush everything out faster. PS: Not to worry, you won’t really smell like a smelly cat, this is just my funny reference to a Friends episode when Pheobe sings a hilariously awful song about a smelly cat!

Irritation

Lastly, some people will experience slight irritation from the baking soda.  Since baking soda is alkaline, it can throw off of your pH balance.  This will sometimes cause irritation.  In the early stages of my formulating, I had used more baking soda.  I did experience some irritation.  I adjusted my formula and lowered the amount of baking soda, increasing the arrow root powder and bentonite clay.  I have had no complaints about the current formula and I have had several family members and friends test piloting it for me over the last year.  However, everyone’s body is different.  If you do experience any irritation, I would recommend trying to use BLB Deodorant every other day, until your body adjusts to the change.  If that doesn’t help, discontinue use until irritation subsides, then try again.  If you still experience irritation, discontinue use altogether.  Send me a message and I will consider a credit or send you a replacement without any baking soda.
